Doughdish Restorations

The first Doughdishes are now nearing 40 years old and they are still going strong! However, some are ready for a facelift to help them look like new again. Ballentine's Boat Shop has done a few cosmetic upgrades and some full restorations. If you have a Doughdish that is ready for some TLC contact Amy for options and estimates.

BULLDOG (ex-HEFFALUMP) Herreshoff Manufacturing No. 991

Built in 1925 for J. Herbert Brown, she was one of 6 12's in the Larchmont Class. BULLDOG was donated to the Herreshoff Marine Museum/America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1978 by William J. Strawbridge.

She has been preserved by Ballentine's Boat Shop, Inc. and is on display at the Herreshoff Marine Museum as the fleet representative of the iconic Herreshoff 12 1/2.

Doughdish LLC is in partnership with the Herreshoff Marine Museum/America's Cup Hall of Fame (HMM) and Ballentine's Boat Shop, with this project. BULLDOG, No. 991, is a Herreshoff 12 ½ built in 1925 in Bristol, RI. She was delivered to J. Herbert Brown as one of six boats in the Larchmont Class. In 1978, BULLDOG, now HEFFALUMP, was donated to the Herreshoff Marine Museum and placed on display as the Representative of the Herreshoff 12. Over her long life, BULLDOG has been altered and updated by previous owners and these changes no longer reflect the originality of the design as built.

Together, Doughdish LLC and Ballentine's Boat Shop, Inc. worked to preserve BULLDOG without losing the rich history in her patina. This was a new and exciting challenge for Ballentine's. Normally, a restoration would address every area of concern, both structural and cosmetic, with the end goal of sailing once again. But, because this particular 12 will remain on permanent display as an example of the class, the work being done is only to return BULLDOG to the museum as an authentic representation of a 12 ½ from the period. The careful attention being paid will preserve the scars and imperfections that only decades of time on the water can create. Once the past modifications are corrected or removed, she will be able to display original framework and craftsmanship from the floor of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.
